Job 15

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered, and said,

² “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk, or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

⁴ Yea, you cast off fear, and restrain prayer before God.

⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

⁶ Your own mouth condemns you, and not I: yes, your own lips testify against you.

⁷ Are you the first man that was born? or were you made before the hills?

⁸ Have you listened in the council of God? and do you limit wisdom to yourself?

⁹ What know you that we know not? what understand you which is not in us?

¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and very aged men, much elder than your father.

¹¹ Are the consolations of God small with you? is there any secret thing with you?

¹² Why does your heart carry you away? and what do your eyes wink at,

¹³ That you turn your spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of your mouth?

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

¹⁶ How much less man, that is abominable and filthy, who drinketh iniquity like water?

¹⁷ I will shew you, hear me: and that which I have seen I will declare;

¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

¹⁹ Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is watched for the sword.

²³ Distress and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

²⁴ For he is torn from the secret place, and brought to the king of terrors.

²⁵ Feeble as water he shall be poured out; and his portion shall be drawn out of the dust.

²⁶ All darkness shall be hid in his secret place.

²⁷ His strength shall be famished, and calamity shall be ready to consume his substance.

²⁸ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

²⁹ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

³⁰ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

³¹ They that come after him shall be astonished at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.

³² Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.”
